For the last couple of years I have strived to complete some kind of reading challenge, in my case usually done through the simplicity of Goodreads and there yearly challenges. I have had varying levels of success with last year being the first since I started in 2016 where I actually completed the challenge a feat that I have repeated for this year.

This was a great way for me to get back into reading books, something that I spent most of my younger years doing but lost during my time at university and in the beginning of my career. So this kind of general reading goal is something I will continue to impose on myself for the coming year, however I would like to take it a step further and aim for not just quantity but a certain level of rigor and depth in my choices.

Therefore I have decided to challenge myself with reading 12 specific books during the year, chosen from six categories where I want to develop my knowledge or push my boundaries.

  • History
  • Poetry
  • Philosophy/religion
  • Memoirs/biographies
  • Finance
  • Woodworking

The categories above are the ones I have chosen for this challenge hopefully they cover both areas of interest and areas where I want to broaden my knowledge which should provide a rewarding experience.

In the coming weeks I will boil down a list of interesting books in these areas to provide me with a pre-planed schedule forcing myself into a more disciplined way of reading.
